The problem is that it is not a person.

Online surveys have quietly become one of the most important tools in modern research. Social scientists use them to understand how people think, what they believe, and how they live. Governments rely on survey data to shape policy. Journalists use it to track trends. Universities and nonprofits depend on it to study everything from food insecurity to political attitudes.

For years, the system worked on a simple assumption. If someone clicked the link and filled out the survey, they were probably a real person.

That assumption is starting to look shaky.

Researchers are beginning to warn that artificial intelligence chatbots may be slipping into the surveys that power thousands of studies every year. Many online surveys offer small payments for participation, sometimes just a few dollars. That incentive has long encouraged people to rush through questions or sign up multiple times. Now it may be encouraging something new. Automated bots can fill out surveys quickly, repeatedly, and convincingly enough to pass basic security checks.

Political scientist Ryan Kennedy and other researchers have shown that some AI models can evade many of the safeguards designed to detect fraud. As these systems become more sophisticated, the problem could grow quickly. What started as a trickle of suspicious responses could turn into a flood.
