When you walk through Brent’s doors, you’re stepping into a living postcard. Black-and-white checkered floors. Chrome-rimmed stools. A soda fountain bar that’s poured root beer floats for generations. But did you know this hometown favorite also had a starring role in the 2011 film The Help? Yep, Brent’s has better screen time than some Netflix actors.
From Pharmacy to Film Set
Brent’s opened in October 1946 as part of the then-new Morgan Center, Jackson’s first shopping center. Originally a pharmacy with a built-in soda fountain, a novelty at the time, it quickly became a community staple. For decades, locals came in for prescriptions, lunch specials, and those iconic frosty milkshakes. (Ice cream sundae? That’s practically medicine.)
But the most cinematic twist came in 2010, when producers for The Help transformed Brent’s into a 1960s diner for one of the film’s key scenes. The set designers barely had to change a thing because the vintage interior was already picture-perfect.
Owner Brad Reeves, who had just taken over and renovated the space, embraced the moment. Some of the movie props still live on inside the restaurant today. And when the cameras left, Brent’s stayed right where it belonged: serving up Southern staples with a side of storytelling. (And zero drama, unlike actual film sets.)
More Than Nostalgia: A Neighborhood Anchor
While many know Brent’s for its movie moment, locals love it for what it’s always been: a reliable spot for breakfast, lunch, and milkshakes that haven’t changed in 70+ years. Think tuna melts, egg-and-olive sandwiches, and patty melts that hit just right after a stroll through Fondren.
And tucked behind the diner? A modern surprise: The Apothecary. This speakeasy-style cocktail bar opened in 2013, serving drinks inspired by vintage pharmacy culture. Expect smoked bourbon, glass apothecary bottles, and a moody ambiance that’s a total flip from the soda shop… but somehow fits perfectly. It’s where you go when your milkshake needs a chaperone.
A Taste of Jackson History
Whether you’re sitting at the counter sipping a limeade or catching up with friends over fries, Brent’s feels like more than a meal. It’s a shared memory, passed down across generations.
