From Stumps to Stardom: The Jackson-Born Tale of Pine-Sol

Open a bottle of Pine-Sol and bam! Instant nostalgia.
For some, itโ€™s the Saturday morning cleaning soundtrack. For others, itโ€™s the smell of โ€œMom just told you not to walk on that floor.โ€
Either way, the origin story? Straight outta Jackson, Mississippi.

Scene One: The Chemist Who Saw Potential in a Stump

The year is 1929. The economy is doing the equivalent of the Windows โ€œblue screen of death.โ€
While the rest of the country is panic-reading newspapers, Harry A. Cole, a local chemist, is out here looking at old pine stumps and thinking, โ€œYโ€™all could be famous.โ€

Hereโ€™s the science bit:

  • Pine oil has natural disinfecting and deodorizing properties.
  • You donโ€™t get the good stuff from fresh logs, you get it from pine stumps that have been chilling underground for 20+ years.
  • These stumps are basically natureโ€™s essential oil diffuser: concentrated, aromatic, and ready to fight grime.

Cole starts harvesting that pine oil, blends it into a golden cleaner, and boom โ€” Pine-Sol is born.
Hand-bottled. Sold locally. Smells like โ€œI just deep-cleaned my soul.โ€

Scene Two: The Jump From Local Hero to National Star

By 1948, Pine-Sol is pulling a modest $77,000 a year… respectable, but not โ€œon every grocery store shelfโ€ yet.

Enter Dumas Milner, a Jackson businessman with a nose for opportunity (and apparently also for pine oil).
Milner teams up with Howard S. Cohoon, a marketing pro who could probably sell snow in July.

Cohoonโ€™s approach:

  • Put Pine-Sol ads on the hottest media of the day, from radio to the newfangled television.
  • Sell the vibe, not just the clean.
  • Aim at the 1950s homemaker market, or the people actually buying cleaners in bulk.

Result? Pine-Sol explodes. By 1954, itโ€™s doing $10 million a year in sales.
From stump juice to national sensation in just six years.

โ€œThatโ€™s the power of Pineโ€‘Sol, baby!โ€
Diane Amos in 1993: the Pineโ€‘Sol Lady who scrubbed her way into our hearts.
Equal parts comedian and mom, she brought cleaning home with equal parts sass and sincerity.

Scene Three: All Shine, Minor Scuff Marks

In the late โ€™50s and early โ€™60s, Pine-Sol is king of the cleaning aisle. Every household swears by it.
Itโ€™s also the era of big claims in advertising, so Pine-Sol gets a gentle tap from the FTC for overselling its germ-killing powers.

But honestly? The public didnโ€™t care. Pine-Sol already had a reputation as the miracle cleaner. (Your grandma probably still has a list of โ€œotherโ€ uses for it.)

Scene Four: Corporate Takeover and the Great Scent Shift

In 1990, Clorox swoops in and buys Pine-Sol. Production stays close to home at the Pearl, MS plant until 2009.

Then in 2014, the formula changes.
Why?

  • Real pine oil became harder to source in huge quantities.
  • It was also getting pricey, making large-scale production unsustainable.

So, Clorox swaps the natural pine oil for synthetic fragrance.
Todayโ€™s Pine-Sol still smells pine-y, but for diehard fans, the original pine-oil bottles are now collectorโ€™s items, and they sell online for a small fortune.

Scene Five: Why Pine-Sol Is Peak JXN Energy

  1. Local Innovation: Who else looks at a tree stump and sees a business empire?
  2. Marketing Swagger: The leap from $77K to $10M in six years wasnโ€™t luck โ€” it was smart storytelling.
  3. Longevity: 95 years later, Pine-Sol is still the smell of โ€œwe just cleaned for company.โ€
  4. Pride in Our Roots: Literally. Our roots were the product.

JXN Fun Fact: Around here, Pine-Sol has always been more than a cleaner. Floors? Yes. Bathrooms? Sure. But youโ€™ll also hear about folks using it to freshen laundry, shine patios, or…?

Final Mop Pass

Pine-Sol is proof that Jackson knows how to take whatโ€™s around us and turn it into something the whole world can use.
From a chemistโ€™s workshop to a global brand, itโ€™s a story of grit, creativity, and a whole lot of fresh scent.

So next time you pour a splash into your mop bucket, remember:
Youโ€™re not just cleaning. Youโ€™re part of a Jackson tradition thatโ€™s been smelling amazing since 1929.

From stump to sparkle, JXN style.
