The Sauce That Keeps Jackson Dippin’

If you’ve lived in Jackson longer than a lunch break, you’ve heard of comeback sauce. It’s our signature flavor, tangy, creamy, a little spicy, and unofficially the city’s favorite salad dressing that no one puts on salad.

So where’d it come from?

Most folks say the first splash of comeback showed up in the 1930s at The Rotisserie, a now-closed Greek diner on Capitol Street. Others swear it was born at Mayflower Café, still open and still slinging seafood downtown. Either way, both spots were run by Greek immigrants, and both helped make Jackson the home of this punchy creation.

The name? “Comeback” was the house dressing, meant to bring customers back again (and again, and again… mission accomplished).

What’s in it?

No official recipe, but here’s the gist:

  • Mayo base (because obviously)
  • Ketchup or chili sauce
  • Worcestershire
  • Hot sauce
  • Garlic, onion, lemon juice

Every restaurant’s got their spin. Some keep it classic, others go rogue. But one thing’s for sure: if you see it on the table in a squeeze bottle, you’re in a good place.

Where to try it:

  • Mayflower Café — historic, iconic, always a win.
  • Hal & Mal’s — pro move: dip a fry, change your life.

So next time you’re out, skip the ranch. Go local. Go comeback. Because here in JXN, if it doesn’t come with sauce, it’s not a real meal.
